Sherman Theatre

In 1973, singer-songwriter Jake Thackray performed at the inaugural concert of Sherman Theatre, alongside his friend and music hero, Georges Brassens.

Now John Watterson, the UK’s foremost performer of Thackray’s work brings Jake’s wit, irreverence, humour and humanity back to Cardiff, with a hilarious and heartfelt celebration of the life and songs of one of our greatest wordsmiths. Highly entertaining whether you are discovering Jake for the first time, or an ardent fan.

Special guests Rudolf Rocker open the evening with some English language versions of Brassens’s songs.

Rudolf Rocker & Old Muggins Christmas Jamboree
The Waiting Room

Rudolf Rocker have already organised two sell-out gigs at the Waiting Room (hosting evenings dedicated to George Brassens and Jake Thackray) and now return for a festive romp through traditional Christmas songs, delicious ballads from their concept album The Whitby Scar, and – undoubtedly – a smattering of Thackray and Brassens too. You can definitely expect a sterling romp through Jake’s Christmas classic Remember Bethlehem! Bring a Santa hat and a sprig of holly and get yourself in a festive mood.

And support comes from Teesside’s own ‘sinister light entertainment band’ Old Muggins, who may even stick their ventriloquist’s dummy Old Bill under the mistletoe for a quick Christmas peck! Fronted by beardy BBC Tees wag Bob Fischer, the Muggins boys present wonky rockabilly, off-beat doo-wop and folk songs about Mike Neville, and might just attempt their heartbreaking Christmas poetry recital You Ate An After Eight Mint (At Seven Forty). Be warned!

The Genius of Jake Thackray
Tyneside Cinema

Jake Thackray was one of the UK's finest lyricists. Best known to television audiences in the late 60's and early 70's for his topical songs, Jake's witty, comic, tragic and distinctly Northern songwriting won many fans at the time and a whole new cult following since his death in 2002.

To celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday, The Polite Room is dedicating an entire evening to the genius of Jake with contributions from local songwriters including PETE SCOTTNEV CLAYBEN HOLLAND and RUDOLF ROCKER FEATURING BOB FISCHER.

'This Song is Offensive' - A gala tribute to Jake Thackray
The Waiting Room

Jake Thackray, who died 10 years ago, was one of the great songwriters of the Englishtradition. He composed and sang ribald tales about nuns, blacksmiths, scallywags, buffoonsand statues. Jake’s misfortune was to be lumped in with middlebrow comic TV performerswhen in fact his great inspiration was the French chanson tradition, from Lully to Brel by wayof his hero Georges Brassens. Music from John Watterson, AKA Fake Thackray, Rudolf Rocker & legendary DJ and writer Bob Fischer.
